We heard a lot about the powerful spice turmeric, for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. We saw creative recipes for cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, avocado toast, energy balls, and ancient grains. Restaurants added poké to their menus. Vegetarians and vegans learned about the importance in the use of aquafaba, nutritional yeast, and hemp seeds. Many Americans tried insects for the first time. People with digestive problems were instructed to soak nuts, make kefir, drink kombucha, and sprout seeds for better digestion.

Now in this new year, if you aren’t following nutrition trends and the new research, it may be the best year to start and schedule your visit to see a dietitian who staysup to date. Nutrition is booming and people are seeking more and more personalized approaches to their health and wellness. At Nutrily, we use clients' DNA to suggest optimized nutrition and physical activity recommendations (check out our services here). We are also in the process to utilize clients’ intestinal microbiome to better ascertain their needs. In 2017, the wellness-minded will try souping rather than juicing and avocado oil instead of coconut oil. People will also switch to alcohol-free alternatives to booze!

A flexitarian, plant-based, and stem-to-root cooking way will be the new trend. Lots of purple and dark green leafy vegetables will be more present in our kitchens. Health focused people will look for more ethical labels and local food. Fat will not be perceived as a health problem anymore and people will finally learn that moderation doesn’t work. Most importantly, promoting sustainability, minimizing food waste, purchasing ugly produce, and following a minimalist lifestyle will all be more valued.
