How hard is it to get and install a 6-lug axle/wheels assembly?

Looking like I may have to go the route of finding an affordable older
machine with the weak rear end and then finding and installing
an updated 1-ton axle. Is the difficulty and cost of that prohibitive?

Any info and opinions would be well appreciated.
Good group here!

That depends on the year of the vehicle and the year of the donor axle.

The springs are wider on 1989 and later 1 ton trucks.

If you have an early motor home and try to fit a later axle to it, you will have to do more fabrication.

Try to get the truck and axle the same vintage (both before 1989) or set aside more time/money to fit something in.

Finding the 6 lug axle and installing it wil cost you more than buying
an already upgraded unit. Towing a car is never recommened no matter how
small.

I agree with Linda 1000% on both issues. A job I will not tackle,

due to the liability, mechanics, and due to cost effectivness.

Bird....Brian

If you can find a complete 1 ton axle, plan onspending about $800-$1200 for all the parts you need. The original upgradekit from Toyota could be installed in 5 hours, plan on about 20 hoursforwhatever parts you can find. As mentioned, you want to find a 1979-1988 1ton axle to install in any 1979-1985 motorhome that wasn't updated.(1986and newer chassis are all 1 ton already)

And forget about towing anything heavier than abicycle or two. These units are already almost at or over max weight out of thebox.

Group memberRich in MI has a complete axlekit for sale, I am sure he will contact you in a day or two.

Yes he's posted all over the country for the last couple of days. It's
alway some variation on 4000 dollars in the price and this seabreeze
isn't the only vehicle they use in the scam. I found a Coachman trailer
with multiple posts with the same format and even a tractor in Mexico,
all variations on 4000 dollars and all many many posts all over. This
isn't one guy this is a big business apparantly worldwide

Brian, Rich from MI here that Bob refers to. I have two complete sets
of one-ton axles with 6-lugs wheels for sale. But hold on, you can
locate something closer to you in Olympia, WA than mine in Michigan.
They are hard to find but not impossible. Expect to pay around $1000
for the axle alone and $50+ each per wheel. Getting everything for
$1000 would take luck. Then you need to service the axle since often
they are taken from retired U-haul box vans with 200k+ miles so the
rear diff, two sets of bearings, oil seals, & brakes need replacing.
I'd say take Linda's advice and just buy a ToyRV with the good axle.

Most older rvs have already been upgraded. Just be patient, it's getting
warmer and more are going to come up for sale. Email me what your
looking for, where and how much you want to pay and I'll help you look.
I'm good at finding stuff
