A Game of Thrones food blog allows fans to share medieval recipes including pork pies of the Night Watch and Jon Snow's favorite honey chicken.

Food enthusiasts Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Sarian Lehrerin started The Inn at the Crossroads to re-create meals from George R. R. Martin's bestselling epic A Song of Ice and Fire, the book on which the hit HBO series is based.

The blog has substitutions for some mythical ingredients, so cooks can make dishes like Dothraki Goat Roasted With Sweetgrass without having to stock their kitchens with dragon eggs or camel.

Fit for a king: Many of the dishes feature meat and game, like the Hedge Knight Duck with Lemon and Cherries

The two friends write that they 'delved deep into the world of Westeros and ventured far over the Narrow Sea' to provide both traditional and modern versions for most of their creations.

The result is more than 100 recipes, divided up by region.

Winterfell is a cold, damp place even in the summer, so a typical stick-to-your-ribs breakfast includes bacon and a soft-boiled egg, cheese, thick bread and fruit preserves. Barley stew is also popular.

The Dothraki dishes are heavy on meat and seasoning and have violent-sounding names, like Dothraki Blood Pie.

The Lannisters have amazing cuisine in King's Landing, with dishes like honeyed chicken with strawberry pie for dessert, a favorite of Sansa and Arya's in the book.

And of course, no medieval meal was complete without the booze.

A section called Game of Brews lists companion beverages including Wilding Cider, Metheglin Mead and Violatium, an old Roman drink made by soaking violet petals in wine for weeks.

In 2012 Ms Monroe-Cassell and Ms Lehrerins' efforts were rewarded when the recipes were turned into A Feast of Ice and Fire: The Official Game of Thrones Cookbook.

However there are also a few recipes mentioned that the bloggers can't make, either because the meat is illegal in the U.S., as with honey-roasted horse, or involves cooking live animals.

So the bloggers passed on authentic yet gruesome fare such as unborn puppies and honeyed dormice, dog sausage and, of course, the great wedding pie with a hundred doves baked into it.

Westeros meal: According to the blog, the stew tastes like gamey chicken with a hint of fish

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 lb. trout, or other white fish
  • 4 frog legs
  • handful ramps (baby leeks), or wild onions
  • 3 cups water
  • 3 tbs. butter

METHOD

Simmer the fish in the water for around 15 minutes. In a separate pan, melt half the butter, and toss the ramps in. Cook until the greens are wilted, then remove to a separate bowl. Add the remaining butter, season the frog legs with salt and pepper, then sautee in the butter until they are golden. The meat will probably start to fall off the bone- this is fine!

Just make sure to take out each small piece of meat when it’s done, and add it to the bowl with the ramps. Once all the frog meat is out of the pan, pour a ladle of broth onto the crusty buttery bits to deglaze them, then pour the whole mixture back into the main broth pot.

When the fishy broth is cloudy and fragrant, add the ramps and frog meat into the pot. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, then serve. Watch out for bones!
