Are there 8 or 9 planets? ›

Our solar system is made up of a star—the Sun—eight planets, 146 moons, a bunch of comets, asteroids and space rocks, ice, and several dwarf planets, such as Pluto. The eight planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Mercury is closest to the Sun. Neptune is the farthest.

Jupiter's environment is probably not conducive to life as we know it. The temperatures, pressures, and materials that characterize this planet are most likely too extreme and volatile for organisms to adapt to.

For larger objects capable of leaving a visible scar on the planet's cloud cover for weeks, that study gives an impact frequency of one every 2–12 years. Even larger objects would strike Jupiter every 6–30 years.

According to the IAU, Pluto is technically a “dwarf planet,” because it has not “cleared its neighboring region of other objects.” This means that Pluto still has lots of asteroids and other space rocks along its flight path, rather than having absorbed them over time, like the larger planets have done.

Without Jupiter, the Earth would be pummeled by impacts from asteroids and comets, rendering our planet utterly uninhabitable.

Their abundances in the deep (below 10 bar) troposphere imply that the atmosphere of Jupiter is enriched in the elements carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and possibly oxygen by a factor of 2–4 relative to the Sun.

Being farther from the Sun, Jupiter is much colder. On average, the temperature on Jupiter's "surface" is -110°C (-160°F). The interior of Jupiter, however, is very hot. The temperature gradually increases as you dive deeper and deeper into the atmosphere.

What planet collided with Jupiter? ›

Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9 (formally designated D/1993 F2) was a comet that broke apart in July 1992 and collided with Jupiter in July 1994, providing the first direct observation of an extraterrestrial collision of Solar System objects.

The object — either pieces of a comet or perhaps an asteroid — pummeled into molecules in Jupiter's atmosphere, rapidly causing friction and heating up. Then, it explodes. "It's pretty much a fireball."

Composed predominantly of hydrogen and helium, the massive Jupiter is much like a tiny star. But despite the fact that it is the largest planet in the solar system, the gas giant just doesn't have the mass needed to push it into stellar status. When scientists call Jupiter a gas giant, they aren't exaggerating.

Actually colonizing Jupiter would not be feasible as there is no surface, it is a gas giant. The tops of the clouds are freezing, and as you go deeper and deeper into the atmosphere, the temperature and pressure gradually become so great they would be fatal to any human, space suit or not.

Unless Planet Nine is observed, its existence remains purely conjectural. Several alternative hypotheses have been proposed to explain the observed clustering of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs).

In 2006, the IAU passed a resolution that defined the planet and established a new category, dwarf planet. And Pluto was categorized under the category of dwarf planet in 2006. Therefore, our solar system consists of only eight planets.

In order of distance from the sun they are; Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Pluto, which until recently was considered to be the farthest planet, is now classified as a dwarf planet. Additional dwarf planets have been discovered farther from the Sun than Pluto.
