How to Play

If Double Play is available in your state, it couldn’t be simpler to take part. All you need to do is select the Double Play option on your playslip to be entered into the second chance draw. Here are some more points you need to know about the game:

  • The cost of entry is an additional $1 per play
  • You don’t pick a different set of numbers for Double Play
  • You can’t play Double Play as a standalone game. It is only an add-on to Powerball
  • Double Play entries do not include Power Play

The numbers you select for the main Powerball drawing are also entered into the Double Play drawing that takes place on the same night. The Double Play draw works in the same way as the main draw, with five numbers from 1 to 69 and a Powerball number from 1 to 26 selected at random. It is held shortly after the main drawing.

Double Play Prizes

Just like the main Powerball game, there are nine different ways to win prizes in Double Play based on how many numbers you match. In fact, the Double Play payouts are worth more than the equivalent Powerball payouts for six of the nine prize levels. For example, if you match the Powerball on its own without any of the main numbers, you win $7 in Double Play compared to $4 in the main draw.

The Double Play jackpot is $10 million and you win by matching all five main numbers and the Powerball. This stays as a fixed amount in every drawing, even if nobody wins. If there are multiple winners, the jackpot is split between them.

The following table shows the prizes available in Double Play, along with the corresponding prizes for the main drawing. The odds of winning are the same for both draws.

The overall odds of winning a Double Play prize are approximately 1 in 24.9

You can win prizes in both Double Play and the main draw with the same set of numbers. For example, if the same Powerball is selected in both draws and it matches up with the one on your ticket, you are guaranteed to receive at least $7 and $4.

Cash or Annuity

Unlike the main draw, the value of the jackpot in Double Play is a non-annuitized figure. If you win the jackpot, you receive a cash lump sum worth $10 million, subject to state and federal taxes. The advertized jackpot in the main draw, by contrast, is an annuitized amount and you can then choose whether to take the money over 29 years or as a cash lump sum.

Double Play Winners

Double Play pays out thousands of prizes in every draw and there have been a number of jackpot winners, but there was a twist in the tale the very first time that someone matched all the numbers. The ticket was sold in Maryland, but the winner failed to come forward within the 182-day claim period, so it became the largest prize in the state ever to go unclaimed.

There was a happier ending for Florida’s first Double Play winner, Manuel Sanchez-Velasco, from Orlando, who landed $10 million on New Year’s Day 2022. Powerball Double Play also proved to be worth entering for another Florida resident, Laura Barnes from St. Petersburg, when she won the jackpot on July 6, 2022.
